The Physio Vision System

Development of state-of-the-art PhysioVision head mounted displays (HMDs) is the imaging display backbone of 3001 Eye Care. HMDs allow users to see a computer-generated image that can either be monoscopic (same image both eyes) or stereoscopic (different images for each eye) which combine to create a 3D image. We have developed an integrated visualization system for stereo retinal images. The system can align left and right stereo images automatically, with a reasonable success rate. In case of alignment failure, semiautomatic alignment can be employed. The aligned left and right stereo images can be visualized in the conventional parallel setup. Moreover, an anaglyph is computed from the aligned images. The disparity between the left and right stereo pair is computed and is used as the depth cue to render the retinal image. The reconstructed 3D surface of the optic-nerve head can be edited, zoomed, panned, rotated, and animated, which allows the user to observe the retinal surface from different view angles. On the quantitative side, tools to measure the size, area, and volume of regions of interest are provided. Therefore, the longitudinal study of patient retinal images is finally possible. Fundus Imaging is just one application of this visualization software. It’s written in Java so it can be run on most computer platforms, including Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows ME, Windows XP, Linux, most flavors of Unix, and Mac, with the Java runtime environment (JRE), Java Advanced Imaging (JAI), and Java3D installed.

With the advances in computer technology and visualization techniques, the PhysioVision Stereoscopic Fundus Imaging system makes the process of reviewing images easy and fast. Not only can it display high quality stereoscopic fundus images, but it catalogs patient details displaying patient progress over time, as well as these features:

  • Automatically aligns the left and right stereo pairs and presents the aligned pair side by side

  • Automatically generates a stereoscopic image

  • Automatically reconstructs the 3D surface of the retina AND by zooming, panning, rotating, and animating, one can interact with and visualize the ONH

  • Analyzes and measures the size, area, and volume of cup, disc, and any other regions of interest (ROIs)

  • The sizes of cup and disk (length, width, area, and volume) are displayed

  • The 3D surface model can be manipulated (zooming, panning, and rotating)

  • The surface can also be animated (spinning) The surface can be clipped to highlight the area one wants to explore

Previous input technologies required custom circuitry and software to enable communication between peripherals and CPU’s. With the development of USB interfaces and keyboard encoders, 3001 Eye Care has high quality, low cost “plug and play” input devices for VR applications. Using these simple devices for input control of a computer program reduces the time to market new products.
